The Electoral College: It’s Not a Popularity Contest

Established by the founding fathers in the Constitution, the U.S. Electoral College is the voting system used to elect the president. Back in 1787, the founders were concerned that the average citizen wasn’t knowledgeable enough to select the country’s leader. There was also the problem of communication and transportation – it would take a massive amount of coordination to ensure that every single vote was counted in an era of horse-and-buggy travel. So, they compromised with the Electoral College.
